Victor Zarnowitz, Director

The studies of the Center for International Business Cycle Research (CIBCR) during the last sixteen years have built on work which was started and pursued at Columbia University and the National Bureau of Economic Research from the 1920s through the late 1970s. Wesley C. Mitchell, Arthur F. Burns and Victor Zarnowitz played prominent roles in this work. Their approach to economic research emphasized quantitative studies and dealt with statistical information on a massive scale. In addition, their studies addressed important economic problems in the life of the nation, such as business cycles, unemployment and inflation. They blended economic theory and empirical fact, not going too far with one without checking it out with the other.

FIBER's mission is to apply business cycle theory to the identification of turning points in economies, inflation and the stock and bond markets. Many financial market participants and policymakers have found the FIBER indices of considerable interest. FIBER publishes it on a monthly basis and its news releases are the subject of much discussion in the various media.
